Technology for Implantable Neural Interfaces
Deployment of proposed and emerging designs for both neural prostheses and bioelectric modulation devices depend upon the maturation, or new development, of highly-targeted technology. These neural interfaces require both sensing and stimulation of the peripheral and central nervous system. While modern electronics seem to be pervasive within numerous devices used in daily living, the requirements for sophisticated neural interfaces are highly-specialized and cannot be directly implemented using available technology. This seminar will describe ongoing multi-parametric and cross-disciplinary research work within the Laboratory or Neural Prosthetic Research, at the Illinois Institute of Technology, aimed at the development of the needed technology. Aspects of electronic design, electrode fabrication, transcutaneous communication, and packaging of new subminiature implantable neural interface devices will be presented.
About the Speaker
Dr. Troyk is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Associate Dean of the Armour College of Engineering, at IIT, and a Faculty Associate in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Chicago. His research interests are broad and include cortical and retinal visual prostheses, implantable EMG sensors (IMES), implantable wireless ECoG systems, functional electrical stimulation systems, design of neural prostheses, smart sensors, Radio Frequency Identification, inductively-coupled telemetry, VLSI design, and packaging of implantable electronic devices. He obtained his BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana, and the MS and Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of Illinois, Chicago.
